Tamarindo Surf Camp is a division of Tamarindo Surf School, the first of its kind founded in Costa Rica. The unique teaching method is based on experience and knowledge acquired over years of study and surfing.

All of our surf instructors are ticos (local Costa Ricans). This means your surf lesson will not only be conducted by an experienced surf instructor who knows the local breaks, but one who will give you some exposure to the Costa Rican culture.

Elmer Zelaya Ugarte

Head Surf Instructor Twenty-four years old, he was born and raised in Playa Grande, one of the best breaks near Tamarindo, Elmer has been surfing for more than seven years and has been a surf instructor for more than 4 years. He has surfed the entire Pacific Coast of Costa Rica in Nicaragua and Panama. Elmer is also a board shaper and repair specialist. He speaks Spanish and English.

“Surfing is my life. The rest is details. The waves travel from far for you to surf. Surf and don't worry about being the best. A good surfer is not the one who knows how to ride the waves the best, but is the one who knows how to enjoy it and have the most fun……….Let's surf!”

Manrique Rodriguez Hernandez

Senior Surf Instructor Twenty-six years old, he was born in Limon, on the East Coast of Costa Rica and grew up on the Pacific Coast in El Llano, Guanacaste. Manrique has been surfing for more than 10 years, and a surf instructor for more than 2 years. His favorite surf spot, Marbella, a short distance south of Tamarindo. Manrique’s enthusiasm and energy is contagious. He inspires his students to attempt and pull off maneuvers they never thought possible. He speaks Spanish and English. Manrique’s motto, “Let’s do it!”
